The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Tuesday that three men are facing terrorism charges after a months-long investigation revealed their alleged plan to form an anti-government militia and seize land in Quebec.

The police stated in a release that the suspects planned to establish an armed group operating outside the Canadian law with the aim of creating an "independent community," noting that they were looking for specific sites to occupy by force.

Inspector David Beattie of the RCMP said:

"This case reflects the seriousness of local extremist tendencies that threaten public safety and constitutional order in Canada."

Preliminary information indicates that the investigation began last year following reports of suspicious activity online, which included calls for violence against federal institutions. The police seized firearms and documents during a series of raids conducted this week.

The suspects are set to appear in court in Quebec in the coming days to face the charges against them, which include:

Preparation for terrorist acts,

Participating in a conspiracy to threaten national security,

Possession of weapons for the purpose of committing a terrorist crime.

The police confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing for the possibility of other partners or supporters of these plots.
