The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Tuesday the arrest of four men in Quebec for their involvement in a scheme based on "ideologically motivated violent extremism," among whom are individuals active in the Canadian Armed Forces.
According to an official statement from the police, the suspects were planning to establish an armed militia aimed at forcefully seizing land in the Quebec City area and forming an "independent community" outside the framework of the state.
The authorities stated that the investigation, which began last year after receiving information about extremist activity online, resulted in the seizure of firearms, ammunition, and documents related to the planning of organized violence.
The police confirmed that "this type of scheme poses a real threat to national security and reflects the growing challenges associated with domestic extremism in Canada."
Charges Filed
Conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism
Preparations for acts of violence threatening the constitutional order
Possession of weapons for the purpose of committing a terrorist crime
The detained individuals will appear in court in the coming days, while the police continue their investigation to determine if there are additional suspects or links to other extremist groups.
Background
This development comes at a time when Canadian security agencies have increased warnings about the threat posed by "ideologically driven violent extremism," whether right-wing or anti-government, especially following a series of similar arrests and investigations over the past two years.
