Canada will have to surpass the United States to reach the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup final.

The Americans, ranked number two in the world, defeated 23rd-ranked Colombia 3-0 in an exciting match on Sunday to set a semifinal date on Wednesday with 10th-ranked Canada at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

The match between the United States and Colombia, held at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, saw seven yellow cards, four of which were for the South American team.

Canada advanced to the semifinals on Saturday by defeating 43rd-ranked Costa Rica 1-0 after extra time in Los Angeles.

35th-ranked Mexico, who beat 50th-ranked Paraguay 3-2 earlier on Sunday at BMO Stadium, will face 11th-ranked Brazil in the other semifinal on Wednesday.

The championship match is scheduled to take place next Sunday in San Diego.

The tournament bracket was reshuffled after the group stage based on the record of number 1 versus number 8, number 2 versus number 7, and so on.

Canada also advanced to the quarterfinals as the top seed, as Costa Rica needed to win a tiebreaker to become the number 8 seed after drawing with Puerto Rico in the other tiebreaker match.

The surprising 2-0 loss to Mexico pushed the Americans down to second in Group A, the fourth seed in the knockout round.

Canada last faced the United States on February 16, 2023, at the SheBelieves Cup, losing 2-0 in Orlando. One might put an asterisk on that result, with Canadian women's focus distracted by an ongoing labor dispute with Canada Soccer.

Players at the start of that tournament announced they would not train or play until their grievances were addressed. They boycotted training the next day and were forced to return to the field under the threat of legal action by Canada Soccer.

The SheBelieves Cup loss dropped Canada's all-time record against the Americans to 4-53-7.

Before that, the North American rivals last met in June 2022 when the United States won 1-0 in the CONCACAF W Championship final in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the 78th minute on a penalty by Alex Morgan.

That was the first meeting between the two since Canada's 1-0 semifinal victory at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021.
