The strike of Canadian postal workers, which started last Friday, has led to a halt in mail and shipping services across the country, including the closure of some post offices.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is demanding improvements related to wages, an increase in paid leave, enhanced health insurance coverage, better protection from the impacts of technological changes, in addition to improvements in other working conditions.
On the other hand, Canada Post stated that these demands are difficult to implement amid accumulated losses of 3 billion dollars since 2018.
A special mediator has been appointed by the federal government to move the negotiations forward, but the parties are still "far from reaching an agreement."
Although the federal government has not yet hinted at legislation requiring workers to return to work, the pressure is increasing to reach a solution, especially with the holiday shopping season approaching and the impact of the strike on small businesses and remote communities.
Negotiations are ongoing this week, and both sides hope to reach an agreement that resolves the crisis and restores services to normal. However, there is still widespread concern about the implications of the ongoing strike on postal operations even after the dispute ends.
