Ottawa – The Canadian government announced its hosting of the G7 Leaders' Summit from June 15 to 17, 2025, in the Kananaskis region of Alberta, as part of Canada's upcoming presidency of the G7 next year. This will be the seventh time Canada has hosted a G7 summit since joining the group in 1976, with the last summit hosted in the Charlevoix region (Quebec) in 2018.
The G7 includes seven of the world's largest economies: the United States, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada, along with the European Union. Since its establishment fifty years ago, the group has worked to coordinate the response of liberal democracies to global economic and social challenges.
In his comments on the importance of belonging to the G7, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan described the group as the “steering committee of the free world.” Meanwhile, Canadian senator and former diplomat Peter Boehm pointed out that Canada's membership in the group represents “a vital tool for exercising its influence and protecting its economic and security interests.”
Although the group initially focused on economic issues, emerging political and economic challenges—especially with the rise of powers like China and India—have pushed member countries to broaden the scope of issues on the agenda to include defense, cybersecurity, rule of law, and human rights.
Political Turmoil Precedes the Summit
The hosting of the summit comes amid internal political turmoil in Canada, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau facing increasing challenges to maintain the liberal minority government in power. The sudden resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland last month, along with divisions within the liberal parliamentary caucus, has increased the likelihood of the government facing a confidence vote.
Despite these challenges, diplomat Peter Boehm expressed confidence in the ability of Canadian officials to successfully manage the hosting of the G7 summit, regardless of who the Prime Minister is at that time. He added that if Trudeau leads the summit next June, he will be the longest-serving leader among his peers in the group, which could enhance Canada's standing in the global political landscape.
The Canadian government confirmed that the Kananaskis summit will feature intense discussions on key global issues, including international security, the global economy, climate change, and geopolitical challenges. The summit will also provide a platform to enhance cooperation among member states and coordinate policies to address ongoing economic and political crises.
The official statement concluded by affirming that Canada's hosting of the G7 summit represents an opportunity to enhance its position on the international stage and solidify its role as a key player in shaping the global response to future challenges.
