Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his support for the plan announced by U.S. President Joe Biden yesterday aimed at ending the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
“Canada calls for an immediate ceasefire, an urgent increase in humanitarian aid without obstacles, and the release of all hostages,” Trudeau wrote yesterday on the social media platform "X".
Biden detailed a three-phase plan proposed by Israel to Hamas yesterday and said from the White House that it could serve as a “roadmap for a sustainable ceasefire and the release of all hostages.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated that Canada “fully supports” this proposal.
“It must be accepted,” Joly wrote on the "X" platform, “and all parties must seize this opportunity to end human suffering and build a path to an irreversible solution based on the two-state solution.”
The U.S. President said that Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another large-scale attack on Israel like the one it launched on October 7, which ignited the current war.
Biden explained that the first phase of the proposed plan lasts six weeks and includes a “full and comprehensive ceasefire” and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip, alongside Hamas releasing some hostages, including women, the elderly, and the wounded, in exchange for Israel's release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
In this first phase, American hostages will also be released, and the remains of hostages who were killed will be returned to their families.
Humanitarian aid is scheduled to increase during the first phase, allowing 600 trucks of this aid to enter the Gaza Strip every day.
The second phase involves the release of all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, during which Israeli forces will withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
“As long as Hamas meets its commitments, the temporary ceasefire, according to the Israeli proposal, will become a 'permanent cessation of hostilities,'” Biden stated.
