Ontario has confirmed that nine cases of listeriosis are believed to be linked to the recall of several refrigerated plant-based beverages branded Silk® and Great Value.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore stated in a press release on Tuesday that there have been five hospital admissions associated with the investigation into the outbreak.
Moore urged Ontario residents not to consume certain refrigerated plant-based beverages from the Silk® and Great Value brands that are covered by the recall as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The province describes Listeria monocytogenes as a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious but rare disease.

Moore stated: "Consumers are asked to visit the CFIA website for a complete list of all products that have been recalled and to check the site regularly as there may be additional product recalls as the food safety investigation continues."
"Ontario residents are reminded to check their refrigerators for recalled products, and if any are found, they should be discarded immediately or returned to the place of purchase. Do not use any recalled products."
The province noted that contamination with listeria bacteria does not change the smell, taste, or appearance of food.
Moore strongly advised the public, especially those at risk of listeriosis, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, to ensure they do not consume any of these recalled products.
The average time from exposure to listeria to the onset of symptoms is usually one to three weeks, but it can take up to 70 days.
Listeriosis typically presents as a mild flu-like illness. Symptoms may appear suddenly and include: vomiting, nausea, cramps, severe headache, constipation, or fever. More severe illness can lead to meningitis and bloodstream infections in newborns and the elderly.
