The pro-Palestinian protesters residing in the weeks-long camp at the University of Guelph have confirmed that they will voluntarily dismantle it by July 15.

The UofG For Palestine group posted on Instagram that its timeline allows everyone to leave safely.

This comes after the university administration issued a legal notice of trespass to the protesters on Monday. On the same day, group members told CBC News that they had no plans to leave.

The group stated in an Instagram post on Monday afternoon: "We will leave according to our own timeline, following the blatant threats from the university administration to use police violence against its students and workers due to their participation in this camp."

The group said that leaving by July 15 means they can do so "with respect for the land we are gathering on" and without wasting camp materials. Items from the camp will be donated "to those suffering from the housing crisis in Guelph."

The camp, named People's Square for Palestine, was first established on campus on May 21. Similar to camps on other college and university campuses in Canada and the United States, the protesters have been demanding that the university divest from any company financially benefiting from the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza that began last October.

Court orders requested by other universities

During the weekend, the university administration asked the protesters to dismantle the camp and leave by 7 PM Eastern time on Sunday.

The university announced on Monday that it would seek a similar injunction to those requested by the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo.

A judge issued an injunction at the University of Toronto, meaning the camp must be dismantled on campus. Protesters at the University of Waterloo entered into mediation talks with the administration and chose to voluntarily end their sit-in on Sunday.

In a statement on Tuesday, University of Guelph President Charlotte Yates said the university decided to temporarily halt any legal action "provided the camp is dismantled and evacuated by 9 AM on Monday, July 15, without incident."

"We are extending this deadline as a gesture of goodwill that the camp will be resolved, will not return, and all activities this week and beyond will be legal and in accordance with university policies. If these conditions are not met, or if campus operations continue to be disrupted, the university will resume legal proceedings."

University of Guelph also stated that the camp's demands for divestment are currently being considered by a committee at the university.
