The Canadian government stated that it "feels deep concern over the recent events in the Middle East" and that "acts of violence must cease" and "a diplomatic solution must be found before more humanitarian tragedies occur," demanding an "immediate ceasefire."
This was stated in a joint statement issued today by Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen.
“We urgently call for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages," the statement added, referring to the Israeli hostages still held in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
The ministers stated that "Canada condemns the increasingly frequent attacks carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) against civilian infrastructure in northern Gaza, as well as its attacks on the positions of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) along the Blue Line."
"These attacks are unacceptable and must stop immediately," affirmed the Canadian government statement.
The statement added that recent attacks on the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and on the school belonging to the Nuseirat refugee camp, near Deir al-Balah, and on a food distribution center in the Gaza Strip "resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians seeking shelter, including women and children."
"The increasingly deteriorating humanitarian situation is unacceptable and continues to worsen due to the significant reduction in the aid allowed into Gaza," the statement added, "and there is an urgent need to increase humanitarian assistance to end this suffering."
"Palestinian civilians have been displaced countless times and have no safe place to turn to, and they are unable to meet their most basic needs. As this conflict escalates, it is the civilians who bear the brunt of the violence and suffer from its lasting consequences," the Canadian ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Development stated in their joint statement.
"We reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire that is desperately needed to end this suffering in Gaza. We also strongly condemn the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel," the statement added.
Ministers Joly and Hussen stated that "Canada also condemns the ongoing attacks by Hezbollah against Israel" and that "the continuous and unjustified attacks by Hezbollah on Israel only lead to further destabilization in the region."
"Canada calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon," the Canadian government statement continued.
"We call on all parties to the conflict to fulfill their obligations under international law, in order to ensure the safety and security of civilians, and also to protect first responders and UNIFIL personnel, on a permanent basis," the statement added.
"Canada continues to support calls for a ceasefire and for finding a political solution through diplomatic efforts," the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Development in Justin Trudeau's Liberal Government stated, "We need a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for the Israeli people, the Lebanese people, and the Palestinian people."
