The Alberta government has asked residents to use electricity only for essential needs and to reduce electricity consumption
This came according to a warning issued by the Emergency Management Agency via a text message sent to citizens' mobile phones.
The agency explained that this measure is an emergency due to the high pressure on the service during extremely cold weather conditions, which puts the province at risk resulting in regular power outages.
The agency also noted that the electricity contribution between Saskatchewan and British Columbia was one of the main reasons for this measure.
It added that a record for energy usage was registered, as revealed by the electricity system operator.
