Air Canada flight to India was forced to return to Toronto after what an official described as an engine issue on board.

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto, the airline said Flight AC042 took off from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Delhi on Monday evening and encountered the issue shortly after takeoff.

Air Canada said that the engine was shut down, in accordance with standard operating procedures, and the pilot requested a priority landing at Pearson Airport as a return time had not been established. The aircraft landed without issue.

A spokesman for the airline said in an email that planes are designed to operate on one engine and pilots are trained to fly safely in such scenarios.

Air Canada added that passengers booked on AC042 will fly to Delhi on Tuesday.
