Large hailstones and heavy rain fell on the Calgary area on Monday night, causing widespread damage to homes, cars, and Calgary International Airport.

The Canadian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change issued a warning of a severe thunderstorm around 8 PM, cautioning of an incoming thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, baseball-sized hailstones, and heavy rains.

The storm hit Calgary, resulting in hail falling on the northern part of the city.

The storm caused damage at the airport, forcing travelers at gates B and C to evacuate.

The international airport announced on Monday the closure of the domestic terminal building due to damage caused by the hail and heavy rain.

The airport stated in a social media post that work has begun to clear the water and assess the damage.

However, parts of the domestic building will remain closed until further notice.

The airport is asking passengers to check with their airlines for flight updates.

The hail also caused damage to motorists.

Water has flooded parts of major roads like Stoney Trail and Deerfoot Trail as drivers attempted to seek shelter under overpasses.

Numerous videos posted on social media show damaged observation decks, broken car windows, and damaged side panels.

According to a weather report from Environment Canada on Tuesday morning, the largest hailstones fell in the Queensland community; nearly the size of a baseball.

The National Weather Service reported that the strongest winds were recorded in Tilley, Alberta, where wind speeds reached 100 kilometers per hour.
