The police said that three teenagers from Toronto are among the five suspects charged in connection with a robbery and theft at a jewelry store in Waterloo. The incident occurred Thursday evening at the Conestoga Mall, and the Waterloo police said that a group of five youths arrived at the jewelry store armed with hammers and a firearm.
They are also alleged to have smashed display cases and stolen jewelry while threatening store employees.
The police said the five suspects left the store and got into a car waiting for them outside.
Officers responded and chased the car quickly. The police said the suspects did not stop and hit the curb, causing the car's axle to break and making it undriveable.
The suspects got out of the car in the Wyman Road area and fled on foot, leading to a police chase.
The police said officers arrested the suspects on Frobisher Drive and took them into custody. No one was physically injured during the incident.
On Friday, the police announced that the suspects, two aged 13 and 16 from Waterloo and three aged between 15 and 17 from the Toronto area, have been charged with multiple crimes, including robbery with a firearm and possession of over $5,000.
The police noted that their investigations revealed that the car used was stolen from Toronto earlier this month. In addition to the car, the police also seized a loaded firearm.
