Washington – Arab Canada News
The Wall Street Journal reported from high-level American officials that the Trump administration is preparing to publicly announce its commitment to the territorial unity of Syria, in a move aimed at reassuring regional allies and solidifying Washington's positions regarding the future of Syria amid the rapidly changing dynamics in the region.
According to the report, the United States does not rule out "considering the possibility of renewing relations with the Syrian government" in the future, but on the condition of Damascus's full commitment to a "series of strict guidelines" related to the political settlement process, abandoning any strategic partnership with Iran, halting support for groups classified as terrorists, along with providing guarantees regarding refugees and human rights.
The newspaper clarified that this approach "does not imply an immediate acceptance of the legitimacy of the Syrian regime," but rather is an attempt to redefine the rules of American engagement, in line with the interests of regional security and the new geopolitical balances in the Middle East, especially after the accelerating normalization steps between Arab countries and Damascus.
Sources confirmed that the anticipated announcement will include a reaffirmation that "any future solution to the Syrian conflict must maintain the unity of Syrian territory and its sovereignty," in a clear indication of Washington's rejection of partition scenarios or the imposition of permanent security arrangements by external parties.
This development comes at a time when pressures are increasing from regional actors, including Turkey and some Gulf countries, to push the United States toward adopting a more flexible approach in dealing with the Syrian file, especially in light of the growing Russian and Iranian influence in the country, and Washington's attempts to mitigate its impact on regional balance.
