The U.S. State Department warned Iran today, Monday, about the consequences of intervening in elections after Donald Trump's campaign team spoke about the hacking of documents by a foreign adversary.

State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters, "These recent attempts to interfere in U.S. elections are not new for the Iranian regime, which, from our perspective, has undermined democracies - or tried to - for many years."

Patel stated that the United States has raised concerns in the past about Iranian cyber hacking.

Patel added, "We still have a number of tools at our disposal to hold the Iranian regime accountable, and we won't hesitate to use them."

He did not confirm whether the United States had verified that Iran was behind the alleged hacking.

At the White House, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby referred questions about who was responsible to the FBI and the Department of Justice, but he noted a previous intelligence report indicating that Iran "is working to influence" the outcome of the presidential elections.

Trump's campaign team indicated on Saturday that Iran was behind the attempted hacking through which documents, including research used in the file of J.D. Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, were sent to journalists.

The Trump campaign warned the media against republishing the documents, stating that such an action would be "carrying out the orders of America's enemies."

The tone was different from that in 2016 when Trump said at a press conference that he hoped Russia would hack the emails of his opponent Hillary Clinton to find deleted messages.

U.S. intelligence concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections to support Trump, who rejected the findings of the investigation.
