U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters that Democrats in the chamber are considering imposing conditions on the aid the United States provides to Israel.
The Senate blocked a resolution that would impose conditions on U.S. aid to Israel. The chamber voted 72 against and 11 in favor of the resolution introduced by progressive Independent Senator Bernie Sanders.
Sanders also said in a speech before the chamber, addressing his colleagues: "Whatever your opinion about this terrible war, we cannot hide... Since the beginning of the conflict, we have not discussed a single resolution addressing the unprecedented destruction, the humanitarian crisis, and the use of American weapons in a military campaign that has caused many deaths, injuries, and displacements."
Although the resolution failed to obtain the required votes for its passage, which was expected, bringing it up for discussion in the chamber is an "exceptional step" of great importance, as it shows increasing opposition to President Joe Biden's policy toward Israel among his supporters.
The U.S. provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military aid, and the Biden administration requested Congress’s approval for $14.3 billion last October. However, lawmakers have not approved the amount so far due to internal disagreements related to immigration reform, which led the White House to seek to bypass Congress’s authority through emergency legislation and send nearly $106 million in military aid to Israel last December.
