Thousands of Palestinians performed the Isha and Taraweeh prayers on Sunday within the precincts of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

According to the Palestinian News Agency, the Islamic Awqaf Department in Jerusalem stated that "55,000 worshippers performed the Isha and Taraweeh prayers in the precincts of Al-Aqsa, despite the security measures that caused a decrease in the number of worshippers due to preventing residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip from reaching Jerusalem, and the establishment of dozens of checkpoints in most alleys of the Old City, at its entrances, and the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque."

The Islamic Awqaf Department had previously announced that 80,000 worshippers performed the first Friday prayer of the month of Ramadan at Al-Aqsa Mosque amid intensified Israeli security measures.

On Sunday, the extremist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir demanded the cancellation of the existing situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque, which has been in place for years and stipulates stopping settlers' raids in the Holy Sanctuary during the last ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan.

Such a change would cause a serious escalation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The War Cabinet had withdrawn the powers related to Al-Aqsa Mosque from Ben-Gvir in February.

Ben-Gvir previously called for preventing Palestinians from praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan.
