The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives on the evening of Thursday, November 2, 2023, approved a bill to provide a $14.5 billion military aid package to the occupying entity that is waging war on the Gaza Strip.
President Joe Biden said he would use his veto power against the bill, which was passed by the House with a majority of 226 votes to 196, with 12 Democrats joining most Republicans in a nearly party-line vote, largely reflecting the partisan division of seats.
This bill represents a strong U.S. response to the war against the "Hamas" movement, but it is also a partisan approach by the new House Speaker Mike Johnson, posing a direct challenge to the Democrats and President Joe Biden, according to the American "Associated Press" agency.
In a departure from established norms, Johnson's package conditioned emergency aid on cuts in government spending in other sectors. This path affirmed the new conservative leadership of the Republican Party in the House, but it also turned what might typically be a bipartisan vote into a vote dividing Democrats and Republicans.
