Former US President Donald Trump said that FBI agents raided his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, yesterday Monday, August 8, 2022, while his son acknowledged that it came as part of an investigation into Trump transferring official presidential records from the White House to his resort in Florida.

The unprecedented search of a former president's home would represent a major escalation in the special records investigation, which is one of several investigations Trump faces regarding his time in office and his private business dealings.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on the raid, which Trump said in a statement involved "a large group of FBI agents."

The FBI field office in Miami has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Eric Trump, one of the former president's adult sons, told Fox News that the search relates to boxes of documents Trump brought with him from the White House, and that his father has been cooperating with the national archives on this matter for months.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that the raid appears to be linked to Trump transferring classified records from the White House.

Trump said the property is "currently besieged and occupied." He did not mention the reason for the raid.

Trump added, "After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this surprise raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate."

The former US president said in a statement published on the social media platform "Truth": "These are difficult times for our nation, as my beautiful home in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," according to AFP.

He added: "It is misconduct by the public prosecution, a use of the justice system as a weapon, and an attack launched by left-wing Democrats who are desperately trying to prevent me from running for president in 2024."

He continued, "Nothing like this has ever happened to a president of the United States before."
