Two former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd are heading to trial on charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder, the third and potentially final criminal proceeding in a case that has galvanized protesters worldwide against racial injustice in policing. Alexander King and Tou Thao have already been convicted on federal charges of violating Floyd's civil rights. Many of the witnesses who were expected to testify in their trial have already testified in both the federal and state trials against their former colleague, Derek Chauvin. Returning to the case, officers Kueng, Thao, and Thomas Lane were working with Chauvin on May 25, 2020, when the latter, a white man, used his knee to pin Floyd’s neck to the pavement for more than nine minutes while the 46-year-old Black man said he could not breathe. King then knelt on Floyd's back, Lane held his legs, and Thao kept bystanders at bay. While King and Thao are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder, prosecutors must prove they intentionally helped Chauvin. Chauvin was the first officer to face trial in a weeks-long, high-profile proceeding filled with emotional witness testimony, video footage of Floyd’s final moments, and expert testimony on use of force and breathing mechanisms, ultimately resulting in a conviction for murder. The second trial in Floyd’s death came in federal court, where Lane, Kueng, and Thao were convicted of violating federal civil rights. In the same context, Rachel Moran, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, said: "It will be, I think, a grueling repetition for witnesses who have testified multiple times and do not want to relive that." But there will be some nuances, as Moran said this case may be more difficult for prosecutors, since while Chauvin's crime was more direct because his knee was on Floyd’s neck, prosecutors in this case must show what King and Thao intentionally did to help him commit the crime.
