The sentencing session is expected to conclude today in the New Westminster Courthouse, British Columbia, for the man convicted of multiple sexual crimes against the teenager Amanda Todd.

The defense lawyers representing 44-year-old Aiden Coban proposed a six-year prison sentence for the Dutch citizen. He was extradited to the Netherlands to face multiple charges related to years of online stalking and harassment.

A Dutch court issued a ruling today, Tuesday (June 28, 2016), allowing the extradition of a 38-year-old man to Canada to face charges of using a computer to blackmail and harass a teenager who subsequently committed suicide.

The Canadian teenager committed suicide in October 2012, a month after posting a widely viewed video on YouTube in which she detailed her ordeal.

Judges said that Aiden Coban - who denies harassing Amanda Todd or committing any offenses - can be sent to Canada after his trial in the Netherlands in another cyber extortion case scheduled to start in early 2017.

Coban’s lawyers acknowledged Todd’s victimization but told the court she was the sole victim and that Coban has no criminal record in Canada, so the Crown's request for a 12-year sentence is unjustified.

Coban is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence in the Netherlands for 68 similar crimes, some involving girls under the age of nine. Coban will be sent back to the Netherlands shortly. The case will end, and any Canadian sentence will be served in the Netherlands, where a Dutch court will decide whether it should run concurrently with his 11-year sentence or start after the Dutch term ends.
