French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Sunday from Rome that "peace is possible" in Ukraine when "decided by the Ukrainians," during a speech he gave at the opening of a peace summit. France is diplomatically seeking to keep lines of communication with Russia open. On the ground, Russia launched missiles and drones at the city of Mykolaiv on Sunday and warned that the war is heading towards "uncontrolled escalation." Likewise, French President Emmanuel Macron considered on Sunday at the opening of a peace summit in Rome that "peace is possible" in Ukraine when "decided by the Ukrainians." He added in a speech at the opening of the summit organized by the Catholic Sant'Egidio community, "We must not let peace today be in some way in the hands of the Russian authority (...) Peace is only possible when it is decided" by the Ukrainians.France has repeatedly emphasized the importance of keeping Western diplomatic channels with Moscow open since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24. In this context, France had agreed with the United States on the importance of keeping lines of communication with Russia open, according to what French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna announced on Friday, warning of the danger of reinforcing Putin's isolation, which she considers stuck in a "strange" view of the world.Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stressed the "importance of keeping communication channels" during a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu, marking the second call between the two since the start of the conflict. Ukraine does not have nuclear weapons, while Russia says it can protect Russian territory with its nuclear arsenal.
