The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, today Monday, in a statement on the "X" platform, called for an independent investigation into the numerous killings of journalists in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli strikes since last October 7.

Türk said in his statement: "I am deeply concerned about the rising number of deaths among media workers in Gaza, and a thorough and independent investigation must be conducted into the killings of all journalists, including Hamza Dardouh and Mustafa Abutrayya, during an IDF raid on a car, to ensure strict compliance with international law."

Türk pointed out, according to statements by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, that in 2023, more than 46 journalists were killed and more than 531 journalists were imprisoned. At the end of last December, the press department of the government in the Gaza Strip reported that the number of journalists killed in the Gaza Strip had risen to 103 journalists since the start of Israeli military operations in the Strip.

Türk added that "among the latest victims is Al Jazeera channel cameraman, headquartered in Qatar, Samer Abodka, who was seriously injured during an Israeli raid on the location where the filming crew was, and died because the ambulance could not reach him, and the TV channel will send the case of its cameraman's killing by the Israeli army to the International Criminal Court."
