Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's Sunday announcement to suspend his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination and his intention to support him.
Trump told Fox News that he is "very honored" by DeSantis's endorsement of him in the Republican presidential nomination race.
He added that he "looks forward to working with DeSantis to defeat Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt president in our country's history."
DeSantis withdraws from the U.S. presidential nomination race
DeSantis ended his presidential campaign on the eve of the New Hampshire primary elections, thus ending his attempt to enter the White House, which failed to meet expectations that he would appear as a serious challenger to President Trump.
In a video he posted on X platform, DeSantis, who came in second last week in the Republican primary elections in Iowa, said he cannot "ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we do not have a clear path to victory. Therefore, I am suspending my campaign today."
DeSantis boasted a large legislative record on issues that matter to many conservatives, such as abortion and teaching race and gender issues in schools.
DeSantis struggled to find his place in the primary elections, losing the caucuses in Iowa - which he vowed to win - by 30 percentage points to Trump.
DeSantis surpassed Trump in several opinion polls in early 2023, but his popularity has been declining for several months due to the flawed strategy of his campaign and his clear lack of flexibility in dealing with voters regarding campaign matters, as well as Trump's strong control so far over a large part of the party's electoral base.
DeSantis's withdrawal means that former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is now the last Republican challenger with a chance to deny Trump the nomination.
The winner of the Republican nomination will face President Joe Biden, the likely Democratic candidate, in the general election next November.
