The elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Monday that on his first day in office, he will sign an executive order to impose tariffs of 25% on all products coming from Mexico and Canada, along with an additional 10% tariff on goods coming from China, citing concerns related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Trump said in a post on his social media platform “Truth Social”:
“On January 20, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products coming from Mexico and Canada, and to end their ridiculous open borders.”
Trump added that these tariffs will remain in place until the two countries take strict measures to curb drugs, especially fentanyl, and illegal immigration across the border.
Regarding China, Trump accused Beijing of not taking sufficient action to stop the flow of illegal drugs across the U.S. border from Mexico. He said:
“Until that stops, we will impose an additional 10% tariff, on top of any other additional tariffs, on all Chinese products entering the United States.”
Trump had previously pledged to end China’s status as a “preferred trade nation” and to impose tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese imports, a rate much higher than that imposed during his first term.
Analysts pointed out that the Chinese economy is currently in a more fragile state due to the ongoing real estate crisis, the risks associated with debt, and weak domestic demand.
Following Trump’s post, the dollar rose by more than 2% against the Mexican peso.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Mexican Ministry of Economy did not provide an immediate comment when contacted by Reuters.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office, and the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also did not respond to separate requests for comment.
