A preliminary agreement has been reached between the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the electrical and trade workers who were set to leave work this morning, Monday, confirmed the union representing the employees.
CUPE Local 2, which represents 661 communications, electrical, and signals workers at TTC, set a strike deadline for 12:01 AM, but the union confirmed that an agreement was reached in "the early hours of the morning."
Sumit Guleria, President of CUPE Local 2, said in a written statement released Monday: "This preliminary agreement is a significant win for our members and reinforces our commitment to the well-being and safety of all Toronto residents."
The negotiated wages will provide much-needed relief from rising living costs, helping our workers manage increasing expenses and ensure a fair standard of living for themselves and their families.
The union did not disclose any details about the preliminary deal, stating it will wait until members have "the opportunity to review its contents and vote on the agreement."
The union had previously indicated that the main sticking point in the negotiations was related to wages.
A potential labor action would mark the first time in 13 years that unionized TTC workers can legally strike after a court ruling last year overturned Ontario's classification of TTC as an essential service.
Earlier this month, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113, which represents over 10,000 transit workers in Toronto, stated that it took "the first step toward a strike" after contract talks with TTC stalled.
ATU Local 113 said it filed a request with the Ministry of Labor to appoint a mediator.
