The leaders of the European Union and their counterparts in the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the Israeli attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, calling for a ceasefire in the sector and allowing humanitarian aid to reach the population without obstacles. The leaders reiterated their support for the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders at the conclusion of the first summit held in Brussels.
In Lebanon, the statement condemned the attack on the UN peacekeeping force.
The summit, described as historic, did not meet the ambitions of the Europeans for a Gulf position supportive of them in the face of Russia and Iran, as the Gulf states maintained their support for the decisions of the General Assembly and the sovereignty of nations, without using the phrase condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the final statement.
The summit also did not register a breakthrough in the efforts of Gulf countries like Qatar and Kuwait to obtain an exemption for their citizens from the visa requirement to enter the European Union.
