Egypt condemned, today Saturday, in the strongest terms the statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he suggested establishing a Palestinian state on Saudi land, describing them as “irresponsible and entirely rejected,” and constituting a “direct infringement on the sovereignty of the Kingdom.”
Egypt's decisive position: categorical rejection and strong condemnation
In a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cairo confirmed that these statements represent a blatant violation of the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter, emphasizing its complete rejection of such “reckless” statements that affect the security and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The statement stressed that “the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a red line that cannot be crossed,” and that its stability and national security are an integral part of Egyptian and Arab national security, noting that “Egypt will not allow any infringement on it in any way.”
A breach of diplomatic norms and the rights of Palestinians
Egypt considered that these statements from the Israeli side represent “a shocking breach of established diplomatic norms, and an infringement on the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” while affirming at the same time that any attempt to impose solutions at the expense of the territories of other countries is unacceptable.
Cairo also emphasized that the Israeli statements contradict the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their entire national soil in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, according to the borders of June 4, 1967.
Egypt calls for international condemnation
In conclusion of its statement, Egypt affirmed its full support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in facing these “careless” statements, calling on the international community to condemn and reject them outright.
Background: Netanyahu's statements provoke controversy
This Egyptian position came after controversial statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an interview with an Israeli channel in Washington, where he claimed that Saudi Arabia “has a lot of land” and could establish a Palestinian state on it, in reference to the Kingdom's position supporting the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Possible repercussions: regional tension and complications in normalization efforts
These statements come amid attempts led by the United States to bridge the views between Saudi Arabia and Israel, as part of broader normalization efforts, but the Saudi position has maintained that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is a fundamental condition for any progress on this file.
Observers believe that Netanyahu's statements may complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts, and may even escalate tensions between Israel and Arab countries, especially in light of the categorical rejection of any Israeli intervention in the internal affairs of other countries.
