The American Republican Party starts its national conference today, Monday, paving the way for Donald Trump to officially announce his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming November elections, just days after he was subjected to an assassination attempt.
Trump is also expected to name his vice presidential candidate during the conference, which is being held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Republican national convention, which lasts four days, begins just two days after a shooting at a Trump campaign rally, causing shock across the United States, and casting a dark shadow over an already troubled election campaign, ahead of the elections that will take place on November 5.
Before the assassination attempt, the race had been dominated by questions about the age of President Joe Biden, who is 81, and his mental capacity, with many Democrats urging him to step aside for a younger candidate to compete against Trump.
A person managed to climb to a high point during the election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday, armed with an assault rifle, and fired several shots at Trump, resulting in panic among participants at the rally.
Trump, who is 78 years old, was hit by a bullet in his ear, causing bleeding, but he spoke defiantly while waving his fist as he was escorted off the stage of the conference.
A firefighter who was attending the election rally was killed, and two others were seriously injured.
Officials from the FBI later stated that the assailant, who was shot by Secret Service agents, is named Thomas Matthew Crooks, is 20 years old, and is from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The motive for the shooting is still unclear, and the FBI investigation is ongoing.
In the aftermath of the assassination attempt, President Biden instructed the Secret Service to review the security procedures for the Republican national convention.
American media reports indicated that during the Republican convention, topics that could alienate some Republican voters, such as the party's stance on abortion or the January 2021 Capitol breach by Trump supporters, are expected to be avoided.
Trump arrived in Milwaukee last night, Sunday.
