The London Police Service in Ontario is seeking the identity of the suspect related to last Saturday night's fire in the city, which may be linked to a hate crime.
It was around 10:40 PM when emergency services were called to the scene in the Wateroak area, where a fire broke out at the home of a Muslim family. The crews were able to extinguish the fire, and no one was injured.
Investigators estimate the damage caused by the fire to be around $30,000.
London Inspector Alex Krygsman said, "In addition to last night's incident, we are aware of several other incidents that occurred at this property since the first week of May concerning property damage, which were signed on a threat memo left before last night's events, and the threats were written on signs expressing support for Palestine outside
the house."
He added, "We are treating this investigation as a hate-motivated incident."
The police also reported that a lone man walked to the address around 9:30 PM on Saturday and left with some items from the front yard of the house.
It was around 10:30 PM when the police said the same man returned and set fire to the front porch before leaving.
The suspect is described as follows:
. Age: 30 to 50 years old
. Medium build
. Gray shoes
. Dark pants
. Light gray zip-up jacket with vertical black accents
under the arms
. Dark-colored hat
. Medical mask
The reaction to the arson incident was swift, even including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of his government who condemned the act.
Trudeau wrote: "My heart is with the Muslim family in London whose home was attacked last night in an act of hatred."
He added, "Canadians have seen how serious and ugly Islamophobia is, and we must continue to confront it, wherever and whenever we see it."
