The Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair said that Hamas is a terrorist organization that poses a threat to the entire world and must be "eliminated".
He noted that he does not expect Hamas to respect international law, including any ceasefire agreement.
His comments are the furthest any Canadian minister has gone in explaining why Canada does not support calls for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
The Defense Minister also appeared reluctant to support recent calls for a "humanitarian truce," but he stated that there are ongoing talks to deliver more aid to the Gaza Strip.
More than one million Palestinians have been displaced in Gaza since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, facing severe shortages of food, water, and fuel.
European foreign ministers agreed on Monday on the need for a temporary cessation of hostilities to allow aid to reach Gaza, and French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting Israel today to advocate for this pause.
