The Canadian government announced the suspension of funding for the women's national team after its involvement in a spying case during the Paris 2024 Olympics, and deducted six points from it, as well as decided to impose financial penalties.

The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) had decided to impose severe sanctions on the Canadian team and its coach Beverly Priestman after evidence of spying on New Zealand's training was confirmed, prior to the matchup between the two teams in the Paris Olympics, using a drone.

FIFA issued an official decision to penalize the Canadian women's team participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics due to the involvement of three technical staff members in the spying case on New Zealand's training.

FIFA announced through its official website the deduction of 6 points from Canada's team, which won its first match last Thursday against New Zealand (2-1), thus falling to last place in Group A, with a total of (-3).

FIFA also announced a financial penalty on the Canadian Football Association, amounting to 200,000 Swiss francs, as well as a one-year suspension from sporting activities for the three involved: Joseph Lombardi, video analyst, Jasmine Mander, assistant coach, and the English technical director, Bev Priestman.

The international federation stated that this decision was issued in light of the possibility that the outcome of the proceedings might affect the development of the ongoing women's Olympic football tournament, and with the aim of protecting the rights of the accused.

It added that after evaluating all the evidence available in the file, the Chair of the FIFA Appeals Committee issued the following sanctions for violating Article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code “offensive conduct and violation of the principles of fair play” and Article 6.1 of the Olympic Regulations “responsibilities”.

FIFA clarified: “All those responsible for abusive conduct and violations of the principles of fair play concerning the use of drones by the Canadian Football Association's women's representation team within the Olympic framework were considered.”

It is noteworthy that FIFA added, “The decision remains subject to appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

Coach Priestman published a statement on Sunday saying: “I am deeply saddened for the players, and I sincerely apologize for the impact that this situation has caused.”

The Canadian Minister of Sport criticized the actions of the Canadian women's football team spying on New Zealand's training, deeming it cheating, and decided to suspend funding for the officials involved in this case for the duration of their FIFA sanctions.
