The “PAWpular PAWs” dog grooming salon in Bell River has confirmed that a dog tested positive for the parvovirus after visiting the facility. The salon confirmed that the dog had a positive test for the virus following its appointment at the salon.
In a statement posted on social media, the salon explained that it is following strict protocols after the confirmation of the case, noting that the parvovirus can survive on surfaces for several months both indoors and outdoors, and can be transmitted via shoes and in shared spaces such as walking paths, dog grooming centers, and parks.
The salon confirmed that all dogs that have visited the facility recently are at risk, and that it has notified all local clients, veterinarians, and dog care facilities.
The statement indicated that vaccinated and healthy dogs have a low risk of infection, while the risk increases for puppies, senior dogs, unvaccinated dogs, and those with compromised immunity. Symptoms of virus infection include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain, and low body temperature.
The salon took immediate action by closing the facility and fully disinfecting it. In its statement, it added:
“We will reopen the facility after complete disinfection, but the safety of pets is a shared responsibility. We urge everyone to monitor their pets and contact a veterinarian if they have any concerns.”
In the same context, Dr. Kate Sweetman from the “Downtown” veterinary clinic emphasized the importance of vaccination against the virus, explaining that the booster shot for the vaccine is necessary to ensure immunity. The cost of the parvo vaccine at her clinic is $34, in addition to examination fees.
Tips to protect dogs from the virus:
• Clean up dog waste.
• Keep the dog clean.
• Avoid public parks and shelters if there are concerns about their cleanliness or the presence of unvaccinated animals.
• Avoid sharing tools such as water bowls, toys, and personal grooming tools.
