An Azerbaijani passenger plane of the "Embraer 190" model crashed on Wednesday near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, resulting in the death of 38 people and the survival of 29 others, according to a Kazakh official.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Kanat Bozumbaev, announced the figures during a meeting with Azerbaijani officials, according to the Russian news agency "Interfax."

The plane was en route from the Azerbaijani capital Baku to the Russian city of Grozny, but it was forced to change its course due to bad weather and attempted an emergency landing 3 kilometers from Aktau Airport. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev confirmed that it is still early to determine the cause of the incident, noting that the severe weather conditions forced the plane to change its course.

Kazakh authorities reported that the passengers on the plane included 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs, and 3 Kyrgyz.

The Azerbaijani airline confirmed that it will continue to provide updates on the investigation and announced the suspension of its flights to Grozny and Makhachkala until the completion of the investigation. President Aliyev also declared December 26 a national day of mourning in Azerbaijan.

Investigations are still ongoing with the participation of Azerbaijani, Kazakh, and Russian authorities.
