In a remarkable humanitarian gesture, the "Flip'n Burgers" restaurant in the Kensington area of Calgary offered hundreds of free meals on Tuesday, including meals designated for the less fortunate in the community.

Providing 300 burgers to "Mustard Seed"

The restaurant provided 300 burger meals to the "Mustard Seed" organization, which works to support the homeless and needy, to provide food for its clients. Hundreds of other meals were also delivered to the "Drop-In" center on Christmas Eve, aimed at helping individuals experiencing homelessness during the holiday season.

Free burgers for all

Alongside that, the restaurant opened its doors to anyone who enters to enjoy a free burger meal. Yorgi Kiro, the co-owner of the restaurant, explained that this initiative stemmed from a genuine desire to give back to the local community.

Family values behind the initiative

Kiro said: “Because we received so much support from our community, we just wanted to give back. We know there are less fortunate people around this area, and we don’t want anyone to feel hungry during the holidays or at this time.” He added that the initiative is inspired by the family values he was raised with.

Kiro explained that his family hails from a poor area, adding: “It’s not just me, but my father and uncle were doing similar work at another restaurant, and we wanted to implement the idea on a larger scale, not just to support the local community, but to support the entire city.”

Gratitude from "Mustard Seed"

Eric McComish, the site supervisor for "Mustard Seed" in downtown, expressed his deep gratitude for the generous donation, saying: “On Christmas Eve, we don’t provide a hot lunch at our downtown location, so Flip'n Burgers' initiative had a huge impact as they provided 300 burgers for our clients.”

McComish explained that the organization supports over 50 women at the adjacent women’s shelter, along with 30-40 people in the recovery program, and about 100-150 people in the general gathering area. He added: “Just the fact that they wanted to do this work, and also other businesses and organizations participating in such initiatives, is a huge support for us.”

Restaurant's goal

The restaurant aims to achieve the goal of providing 1,000 burger meals during the holiday season, in a step that reflects the spirit of solidarity and support for the community.
