At a traditional ceremony marking the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lit the celebratory candle, taking the opportunity to send a clear political and security message.
During his speech, Netanyahu threatened the Houthis in Yemen with a harsh response to any attempts that threaten Israel's security, indicating that his government would not tolerate any threats coming from the groups he described as “Iran's terrorist arms.”
It is worth mentioning that the Houthis challenged Netanyahu and targeted a sensitive site within Israel, as reported in breaking news a moment ago.
Clear threat messages
Netanyahu affirmed that Israel possesses the “capability and readiness” to respond to any attack from the Houthis, who have previously launched drones and missiles towards Israeli territory as part of a regional escalation. He added, “We will not allow any group to threaten our sovereignty and the security of our citizens, and we will respond forcefully to any provocation.”
Regional escalation
This threat comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, where international pressure on Iran and its supported groups is increasing. Israel views the Houthis as a strategic threat, especially after they announced advanced military capabilities that threaten the depth of the region.
Hanukkah as a platform for political messages
This year's Hanukkah celebration transformed into a platform to showcase Israel's strength and its readiness to face regional challenges. Netanyahu focused on linking traditional Jewish values to the “necessity of defending the Jewish state.”
Consequences of the threat
Netanyahu's statements raise fears of a potential new military escalation, especially with ongoing Israeli military operations in Syria and Lebanon, and the Houthis’ readiness to respond to what they consider Israeli provocations.
It remains to be seen how events will unfold, and whether the region will witness a new confrontation that could alter the balance of power within it.
