The Canadian government is studying the possibility of lifting the sanctions it imposed on Syria more than a decade ago, in addition to removing the "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" (HTS) from its list of terrorist organizations, following the overthrow of the Assad regime earlier this month by opposition forces.
According to informed sources cited by local news agencies, the Canadian government is closely monitoring the developments on the ground after opposition forces took control of the capital Damascus two weeks ago, thereby ending half a century of authoritarian rule.
It is worth noting that Canada designated "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" as a terrorist organization on May 23, 2018.
In this context, the Canadian Foreign Minister stated that Canada is closely watching the situation in Syria and is considering its options regarding sanctions and terrorist designations, emphasizing the importance of ensuring stability and security in the region.
It is noteworthy that "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" has been listed as a terrorist organization in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Turkey, due to its previous association with al-Qaeda.
With the recent developments in Syria, some countries have begun to reconsider the designation of "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham," as reports have indicated that the United Kingdom may consider removing the group from its list of terrorist organizations.
These movements come as part of international efforts to reassess the situation in Syria following recent political changes, with a focus on supporting stability and reconstruction in the country.
