Officials said on Sunday that a Russian missile strike on infrastructure in the Lviv region in western Ukraine killed one man, while another man was killed in an attack in the northeast of the country.

Lviv city governor Maksym Kozytsky wrote on the social media app Telegram that the attack in Lviv destroyed a building and caused a fire. He added that rescue operations are underway.

In the Kharkiv region, state governor Oleh Syniehubov said an air raid killed a 19-year-old young man on Sunday after a shell hit a fuel station.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands in the Odesa region of Ukraine were left without electricity on Sunday after wreckage from a Russian drone crash caused a fire at a power facility, according to state governor Oleh Kiper. DTEK, the largest private electricity operator in Ukraine, said about 170,000 homes experienced power outages as a result of the attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down nine of 11 Shahed drones launched by Russia overnight, as well as nine of 14 cruise missiles.

Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent days, causing severe damage in several regions.

Ukrainian energy company Centrenergo announced on Saturday that the Zmiiv thermal power plant, one of the largest in the Kharkiv region in the northeast, was completely destroyed after Russian shelling last week. Power outage schedules remain in place for about 120,000 people in the region, where 700,000 lost electricity after the plant was shelled on March 22.

In a message on Sunday coinciding with the day some Christians in Ukraine celebrate Easter, President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the country to persevere.

"No day or night now passes without Russian terrorism trying to destroy our lives. Last night, we once again saw missiles and Shahed rockets launched against our people.”

Zelensky said, “We defend ourselves, we persevere; our spirit does not surrender and knows that death can be avoided, life can win.”

Catholic, Protestant, and Greek Orthodox Christians in Ukraine celebrate Easter on Sunday according to the Gregorian calendar. The religious majority in the country, Orthodox Christians, follow the Julian calendar, which sets Easter in 2024 on May 5.

Many Orthodox Christians in Ukraine began celebrating Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar on December 25, 2023, a step adopted by some churches in the country to distance themselves from Russia. However, the dates for Easter and other religious holidays have remained unchanged so far.

In Russia, 10 Czech-made missiles fell in the Belgorod border region on Sunday, according to the Ministry of Defense. Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a woman was injured when a fire broke out following the attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed orders heralding the start of the annual spring conscription season in the country, officially drafting 150,000 recruits.

The Russian parliament raised the maximum conscription age from 27 to 30 in July 2023, a move that appears to be part of efforts to expand the country's army during the fighting in Ukraine. All Russian men are required to complete one year of national service, although many avoid conscription through deferrals granted to students, people with chronic diseases, and others.
