The elected President of Taiwan Lai Ching-te, the candidate of the Taiwanese Democratic Progressive Party, announced today, Saturday, that the election results in the country showed the world that Taiwan chose to stand alongside democracy.

He said at a press conference upon announcing his victory in the presidential elections, "The Taiwanese people have succeeded in resisting the efforts of foreign powers to influence this election."

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party retained power in Taiwan after electing its candidate Lai Ching-Te, also known as William Lai, as the president of the country to replace the outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen.

In Taiwan, the Democratic Progressive Party is the first political party to win three consecutive terms since the island nation's people began directly electing their president in 1996.

Lai (64 years old) announced his victory after the opposing candidates conceded defeat.

The figure who ran on Lai’s ticket for vice president is Hsiao Bi-khim, aged 52. The result is expected to anger Beijing due to the Democratic Progressive Party’s resistance to Chinese rule.

During the election campaign, Lai reiterated the necessity of integrating Taiwan into the broader global community rather than falling into China’s trap.

Lai said in the press conference that "Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is an important message for my presidency."

Lai pointed out that on the basis of reciprocity and dignity, he wishes to communicate with China. Lai continued, "At the same time, we are also determined to protect Taiwan from continuous threats and intimidation from China."

In the legislative elections, the Democratic Progressive Party failed to maintain the majority.

Lai explained: "Regarding the new structure of the legislative body, Taiwan must build a political environment of communication, consultation, participation, and cooperation," promising to carefully study the policies of his electoral opponents.
