The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called today, Wednesday, on Western countries to recognize the State of Palestine.

This came in a speech at the opening of the second Ambassadors' Conference in the capital, Madrid, in which he pointed out that Spain took a balanced stance following the Hamas attacks on October 7 and the Israeli aggression on Gaza thereafter.

He said: "The path that should be taken currently is to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire and to hold an international peace conference as soon as hostilities end, and a serious and convincing solution based on the two-state formula should be reached with the support of the international community."

He added that some Western countries still do not recognize the State of Palestine despite recognition by more than 130 countries, stressing that serious discussions should begin to ensure Western countries recognize the Palestinian state.

He continued: "It is necessary to implement a solution based on the recognition of two states and to ensure coexistence between Palestine and Israel together in peace and security, and the Palestinian people should not pay the price for Hamas's actions."

The Spanish government previously announced that one of its priorities is the recognition of the Palestinian state, but it does not want to do so alone, so it seeks to convince other European Union countries such as Germany and France.
