Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called yesterday, Wednesday, on Western countries to recognize the State of Palestine, during the opening speech of the second Ambassadors Conference in the capital Madrid, noting that Spain has taken a "balanced stance" following the war on Gaza.

Sánchez said that the path that should currently be followed is to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire and hold an international peace conference as soon as hostilities end, and a serious and convincing solution should be reached based on the two-state formula with the support of the international community.

He also pointed out that some Western countries still do not recognize the State of Palestine despite more than 130 countries having recognized it, adding that a serious discussion should begin to ensure the recognition of the Palestinian state by Western countries.

He continued: "It is necessary to implement a solution based on the recognition of two states and that guarantees coexistence."

It is worth mentioning that Sánchez has directed criticism at the occupation's aggression on the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, considering that the targeting of civilians is "unacceptable."

His statements caused anger in the occupation, as the former Foreign Minister of the occupying entity, Eli Cohen, said that these statements repeated "false claims" and "gave a boost to terrorism," followed by a tit-for-tat summoning of the ambassadors of the two countries.

The Spanish government previously announced that one of its priorities is the recognition of the Palestinian state, but it does not want to do so unilaterally, so it seeks to convince other European Union countries, such as Germany and France, to do so.
