The Canadian skater Nikolai Sorensen (35 years old) has been banned for six years for sexual assault, following an investigation conducted by the Canadian Sports Integrity Office that lasted several months. The charges against Sorensen stemmed from an incident that occurred on April 21st last year, after he was accused of sexually assaulting a figure skating coach.
Spanish newspaper Marca revealed that although Sorensen has consistently denied these accusations, Skate Canada decided to impose the penalty and suspend him for six years, listing this penalty in the sports record for a sport free from abuse. However, it remains subject to appeal or contest, as Sorensen has not been tried in court yet, putting his career at real risk, especially since he will be 41 years old after completing his suspension.
After the charges were filed, Sorensen and his skating partner, Laurence Badri, decided to withdraw from the Canadian national competitions, as they believed their presence could be a significant distraction. Nevertheless, the duo returned to compete in the "Four Continents" championship in Shanghai, China, where they managed to win the silver medal, reflecting the strength of their performance despite the pressures they face.
Sorensen has achieved numerous successes in his career, having represented Canada in the 2022 Winter Olympics and won several medals in Grand Prix competitions and Challenger Series events. Despite this success, he now faces significant challenges due to this case, which threatens his professional future and puts him to a tough test.
Sorensen began skating in 2012 with Canadian skater Vanessa Krone, but she decided not to compete with him and to work as his partner again for reasons that remain unclear to this day, especially since everyone wants to be on the same team with him, given his great skills.
