The Saskatchewan government officially announced the start of implementing new procedures to ban the use of mobile phones in schools during class time, starting from the 2024-25 school year.
The province stated in a press release that the ban will apply to all schools in the province, including from kindergarten to grade twelve.
The province mentioned that teachers will be able to request an exemption from the administration to allow students to use their mobile phones during study time when needed for a specific educational purpose, for grades nine to twelve.
On another note, Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said in his statement regarding this matter: “Technology is important, but most of the time, mobile phones distract students from their academic subjects, and the new policy will allow students to collaborate with their teachers and focus on learning the skills and knowledge they need to reach their potential.”
It is worth noting that students who need to use their mobile phones during class time must have medical reasons or specific educational needs to receive an exemption from the school department they belong to.
