The Independent: After the device explosions in Lebanon, are our phones safe?

Great questions about what is happening in Lebanon with the explosions of devices, is it a hack, or a different kind of targeting, or was there a manipulation of them while in the manufacturing stages before they reached the targets? But if we want to talk about the subject from a technical side, it should be noted that the batteries used in smart devices cannot cause the kind of damage seen in the pictures and videos due to relying on lithium technology.

The batteries in our devices rely on lithium technology, so if they are exposed to high temperatures, they may swell. Even if, for example, there was an attempt to target a user by raising the temperature of their device through a vulnerability, which is unlikely, the worst that could happen is that the device would ignite, and before ignition, its temperature would rise, alerting the user before the problem occurs; there cannot be explosions in the device as seen in the videos coming from Lebanon.

Lithium is a soft, silvery metal whose name is derived from the Greek word lithos, meaning rock, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. This metal was discovered in 1817 by Johan August, and it is typically used in mobile phones, laptops, cameras, rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, and non-rechargeable batteries used, for example, in children's toys. It is also used by combining it with aluminum and magnesium in the coating of the panel used in bulletproof vests.

It is noted that there are other battery technologies currently being manufactured from different materials such as Silicon/Carbon batteries and other technologies that consider the issue of device heat and swelling. Furthermore, even if a battery is struck with a sharp object deliberately, it cannot explode or catch fire.

It is clear that what happened in Lebanon from a technical perspective is manipulation of the devices in a certain way before they reached the end user, and after obtaining them, certain commands were activated which caused such explosions. However, the rest of the devices we have cannot explode from a hack because this is technically impossible, as far as we know so far.
