A copy of a letter reviewed by Reuters showed that more than a thousand officials at the U.S. Agency for International Development signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden's administration to demand an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
The letter is the latest sign of dissatisfaction within the U.S. government regarding Biden's support for Israel in its response to Hamas attacks on October 7.
The letter stated, "We are concerned and frustrated by the numerous violations of international law, which are laws aimed at protecting civilians and medical and media workers, as well as schools, hospitals, and places of worship."
The letter added, "We believe that further heavy loss of life can only be avoided if the U.S. government calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza."
The letter, published on November 2, has so far received 1,029 signatures from employees at the U.S. Agency for International Development. The names of the signatories are withheld, but it appears to be signed by officials from many agency offices in Washington, as well as officials spread around the world.
Jessica Jennings, the agency's spokesperson, said in an email response, "We appreciate the ongoing dialogue with our staff and partners and continue to welcome our team’s sharing of views with leadership."
More than 500 people who worked on Biden's 2020 campaign published a letter on Thursday reviewed by Reuters urging the president to support an immediate ceasefire, and photos on social media showed a group of congressional staff organizing a silent vigil on Wednesday at the Capitol building to demand a ceasefire.
