A person was rescued from a low-rise burning building at the corner of Sweetland Street and Osgoode Street in the Sandy Hill neighborhood in downtown Ottawa on Thursday morning, according to Ottawa Fire Services.
The service said in a post on X that a firefighter was also injured when he fell to the ground.
A spokesperson for Ottawa paramedics said that it was not necessary to transport any firefighters to the hospital. Another adult was transported for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.
Firefighters reported a fire around 6:15 a.m. near the northern end of Sweetland, close to Laurier E. Street.
Firefighters asked people to avoid the area, as Ottawa Police closed Sweetland and Osgoode streets around this intersection.
The power outage map from Hydro Ottawa also indicates a power outage affecting hundreds of customers in the area until around noon. It said the power outage was due to a different fire.
The school board said the fire forced Francojeunesse Public Elementary School to close on Thursday.
