Some videos circulating on social media clearly showed that Israeli fans were the ones who initiated provocation and aggression against citizens' properties and removed the Palestinian flag from the balconies and windows of homes. Despite this, U.S. President Joe Biden found nothing but to condemn the attacks that targeted Israeli football fans in Amsterdam, Netherlands, early Friday, describing them as “appalling and reflecting dark moments in history when Jews were persecuted.”

Biden mentioned in a post on the “X” platform that “the United States is in contact with officials in both Israel and the Netherlands, and we appreciate the Dutch authorities' commitment to hold the perpetrators accountable.” He added: “We must fight anti-Semitism uncompromisingly wherever it appears.”

The confrontations erupted in the Dutch capital late Thursday after the football match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that all those injured in the attacks had left the city’s hospitals. Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Saar is scheduled to travel to Amsterdam on an urgent diplomatic visit to follow up on the events.

The ministry clarified that “Foreign Minister Gidon Saar will soon head to the Netherlands in light of the serious events.” Amsterdam police stated that they arrested 62 people in connection with the attack targeting Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, pointing out that Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema described the perpetrators as “anti-Semitic criminals” who carried out assaults in hit-and-run tactics and managed to flee from the police despite their heavy presence.

Video clips circulating showed the intervention of riot police in the clashes, where some attackers chanted anti-Israel slogans. For its part, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported that the dispatch of the two planes came following a “very violent incident” targeting Israelis after the match. It is noted that Ajax Amsterdam is traditionally described as a Jewish club.

The Netherlands has witnessed an increase in anti-Semitic incidents since the Israeli attack on Gaza following Hamas's assault on Israel on October 7 last year, as several Jewish organizations and schools reported receiving threats and hate messages.
