The Palestinians recall the "Deal of the Century" that former US President Donald Trump proposed at the beginning of his first presidential term. Despite the changing course of the deal, there are numerous steps taken by Trump and achievements during his tenure that are hard to forget, particularly those decisions related to the city of Jerusalem, which holds great importance to all parties.

While in power, specifically on December 6, 2017, then-President Donald Trump decided to relocate his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, considering it the capital of Israel, and decided to close the American consulate in the holy city.

Support for Palestinian hospitals in the city was subsequently halted, and births in Jerusalem were registered, indicating that Israel is their place of origin.

What were the most significant events that Jerusalem experienced during Trump's presidency between the years:?

Details of the Decisions

In the statement announcing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Trump stated: "In 1995, Congress passed a law urging the federal government to relocate the US embassy (from Tel Aviv) to Jerusalem, recognizing that this city of great significance is the capital of Israel."

Trump actually moved his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 18, 2018. The choice of date was not arbitrary, as it coincides with the date Israel celebrates its founding.

Just a few months later, specifically on September 7, 2018, the US State Department announced a ban on providing 25 million dollars that was supposed to be granted to 6 Palestinian hospitals in Jerusalem for assistance.

On October 29, 2020, Washington allowed Americans born in Jerusalem to list "Israel" as their place of birth.

These decisions were not isolated; they were accompanied by Trump’s decision to withhold 200 million dollars that were to be sent as economic aid to the West Bank and Gaza, as stated in a White House announcement on August 25, 2018, and as reported by the official Palestinian news agency "Wafa".

Additionally, the US State Department announced in a statement on September 1, 2018, that it would suspend all financial support to all institutions of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, "UNRWA." The US contribution dropped to 60 million in the same year.
