The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom concluded that the frequency of attacks on journalists in Germany increased in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The non-profit organization announced today, Tuesday, in its annual analysis that it recorded 69 cases of physical assault on journalists in 2023 compared to 56 cases in 2022.
The capital Berlin witnessed the largest number of assaults, with 25 cases in 2023, while the state of Saxony in eastern Germany experienced the highest number of attacks in the previous year.
The analysis concluded that demonstrations are the most dangerous environment for media workers in Germany, as 77% of known assault cases were linked to protests. 40% of the 53 cases were recorded during pro-Palestine gatherings.
The previous analysis indicated that the lack of anonymity for journalists in their local areas could pose a security issue for them.
Reporters Without Borders recently published its data, which, in contrast, indicated a decline in the number of attacks on media workers in Germany, from 103 in 2022 to 41 in 2023.
