Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani expressed his regret over the continuation of the war on Gaza at an escalating pace, despite his country's affirmation of the importance of an immediate ceasefire, stopping the bloodshed, protecting civilians, and preventing the expansion of the conflict.
He said during a press conference with his American counterpart on Sunday evening that the war has claimed the lives of more than 23,000 Palestinians, noting that "the failure to reach an immediate ceasefire leads to an increase in those numbers over time."
He added: "We have reached a stage where we are accustomed to scenes of killing and destruction and unprecedented humanitarian disaster scenes, with children, women, and civilians turning from victims into mere numbers that pass by us in news bulletins."
He continued: "What is happening in Gaza is a great test of our humanity, and we must not surrender to normalizing this scene that we see daily; hospitals are still being targeted, schools are still being bombed, the displaced are still being killed, the threat of displacement persists, and the threat of a new Palestinian catastrophe remains, as evidenced by the provocative statements made by extremist ministers in the Israeli government."
He stressed the importance of containing the crisis as soon as possible, because a ceasefire helps calm the rest of the regions in the area.
He pointed out that "the focus is on stopping the fighting and affirming that Gaza is part of the occupied Palestinian land, and only the Palestinian people have the decision over it," stressing that "there is no peace in the region without an urgent resolution to the conflict, in accordance with international legality resolutions."
